Dear Buffalo Soldiers of MD,

I hope this message finds you well. My name is Chase Matthews, and I am writing to express my sincere gratitude for your generous support of my undergraduate education at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). Your scholarship played a meaningful role in my academic journey, and I want to take a moment to thank you and share what your contribution has helped me accomplish.

Over the past several years, I have been able to fully immerse myself in academic, research, and international experiences that have shaped my future as an aspiring anthropologist. During my time at UMBC, I have:

  • Excelled in the Honors College and earned recognition as a Humanities Program Scholar and a Ronald E. McNair Scholar, all of which strengthened my academic foundation for graduate study.
  • Conducted original research in anthropology—designing a project focused on generational differences in cross-cultural connection and working as a research assistant supporting studies in public health and urban anthropology.
  • Studied abroad in Greece, completed independent cultural research in Senegal, and even worked in Saudi Arabia managing international youth programs—experiences that shaped my understanding of global health, identity, and culture.
  • Served my campus in multiple leadership roles, including Conference Ambassador for the McNair Scholars Program, Orientation Peer Ambassador, Teaching Assistant for Honors College forums, and a Student Disability Peer Mentor, where I supported students with disabilities through individualized mentoring.
  • Received several additional honors, including the Bunting Family Community Engagement Award, multiple delegate scholarships, and recognition from the American Anthropological Association for photography.

Your support made it possible for me to pursue these opportunities with focus and dedication. I want you to know that the investment you made in me has truly mattered.

Next Steps

I am now preparing for the next stage of my academic career. I am currently applying to several graduate schools in the United States; however, my top choice is Oxford University, where I hope to pursue advanced study in anthropology with an emphasis on global health and medical anthropology.

As I prepare for this transition, I would be grateful for any recommendations you may have regarding graduate-level scholarships, fellowships, or funding opportunities. Your guidance has already made an impact on my journey, and any additional insight you could offer would mean a great deal.

Thank you again for believing in me and supporting my education. I hope to continue making you proud and honoring the investment you made in my growth.

Warm regards,
Chase Matthews
